Halloween Had Other Plans

Halloween was supposed to be costumes, trick-or-treating, and happy kids hauling home enough candy to make a dentist nervous.
Instead, Halloween looked at my plans and said, “That’s cute.”
I’ve been without a car for a while, but I really thought I was going to get a rental. In my mind, we were practically on the road already.
Then the rental fell through.
Apparently, the only thing getting picked up that day was my stress level.
I had to work Saturday, and none of my family was able to help get the kids’ costumes sorted out or take them trick-or-treating. So there I was, trying to work while mentally running an entire Halloween emergency department.
“Can somebody take the kids?”
No luck.
“Okay, what about—”
Still no luck.
At that point, the scariest thing about Halloween wasn’t ghosts or monsters. It was transportation.
I left work early and headed home, determined to salvage the evening. I ordered candy and made some food because, even if Halloween was falling apart, we were not about to be disappointed on an empty stomach.
I tried one more time to find somebody to take the kids out.
That plan flopped, too. Honestly, my plans were dropping faster than characters in a scary movie.
My oldest daughter went to work, and my two youngest daughters stayed home with me. We didn’t have the Halloween we’d pictured, but we had scary movies, TikTok videos, face paint, and each other.
The living room became our movie theater, our TikTok studio, and a beauty salon with extremely questionable licensing.
We painted faces, made videos, and found a way to enjoy ourselves. We might not have been out knocking on doors, but we were definitely creating enough entertainment behind ours.
And somewhere between the scary movies and the face paint, the night stopped being all about what hadn’t worked out.
My kids are my everything. I wanted to give them the Halloween they’d hoped for, and it hurt that I couldn’t make all of it happen. But being together reminded me that a night can still hold something good, even when it looks nothing like the plan.
Sometimes the people you’re trying so hard to cheer up end up cheering you up, too.
Was it the Halloween we wanted? No.
Did we still make memories? Absolutely.
Next year, though, I’d prefer the plot twist to come from the movie—not the rental car.
